Massive power outage reported in Manhattan, delaying train services

A massive power outage was reported Friday morning in the upper part of Manhattan, knocking out not only lights but also cellphone service.

A Con Edison spokesperson tells NBC it is investigating the widespread outages across Harlem, Central Park and Lenox Hill. At one point it was pitch black as far as eyes could see along Broadway at 73rd Street going north.

Power came back on after around 20 minutes for parts of the Upper West Side, but there were still outage reports on the Upper EastSide.

Con Ed’s outage map showed about 140,000 customers without power in Manhattan as of 6 a.m., though it was not clear how much of that was tied to the damage from Tropical Storm Isaias last Tuesday, as opposed to Friday’s blackout.

Many subway lines are delayed and Metro-North is now saying 10-15 minute delays in and out of Grand Central because of the outage.
