The chairman of the United States Postal Service board of governors is currently a director for a super PAC aligned with Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Robert Duncan, the chairman of the board that selects the postmaster general, is listed as a director for the Senate Leadership Fund, according to a new Virginia state business record that was filed at the end of August.
The PAC is run by allies of McConnell, including Steven Law, the majority leader’s former chief of staff. The group aims to protect and expand the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.
The development comes as USPS leaders face scrutiny from Democrats after the post office removed mail-sorting machines and implemented other cutbacks at a time when millions of voters are preparing to cast ballots by mail due to the coronavirus pandemic.
House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., said she plans to issue a subpoena to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy for documents related to mail delays at USPS. She also expects to request documents from Duncan himself, who, along with the other board members, was responsible for selecting DeJoy to lead the agency.
As CNBC previously reported, Duncan, who is often called Mike, was listed on a 2019 filing as a director for the PAC. He’s also a director of American Crossroads, a super PAC backing President Donald Trump‘s reelection bid.
A spokesman for the PACs told CNBC that Duncan is on the boards that oversee a number of issues, including executive compensation.
“Mike Duncan has been a member of the boards of directors of American Crossroads and Senate Leadership Fund for a number of years, and he continues to serve in that role,” Jack Pandol, a spokesman for the committees, told CNBC. “Our boards, like most boards, oversee organizational policies, financial management, senior executive compensation and management performance — but are not involved in directing day-to-day operations or projects.”
A USPS spokesman did not return a request for comment.
Meanwhile, the Senate Leadership Fund is on track to have its best election cycle for fundraising since it was formed in 2015.
It has raised just over $129 million so far in the 2020 cycle, close to $1 million away from its 2018 record of $130 million, according to data from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
The PAC has $117 million on hand going into the final three months of the election. It has only spent nearly $17 million.
Top donors to the PAC include casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, and Timothy Mellon, the chairman of Pan Am Systems Inc.
