New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to hold his daily press briefing on Thursday after President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funding to “lawless” cities, including New York City.
On Wednesday, Trump singed a memo that instructs the U.S. Attorney General to publicly identify a list of states and local jurisdictions that “have permitted violence and the destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures to counteract” the actions.
The memo lists a number of Democrat-led cities where violence and destruction has “continued unabated,” including New York, Seattle, Portland and Washington D.C.
“My Administration will not allow Federal tax dollars to fund cities that allow themselves to deteriorate into lawless zones,” the memo says.
In a tweet on Wednesday evening, de Blasio called the memo “unconstitutional” and said the city would take the president to court. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Trump has “actively been trying to kill New York City ever since he’s been elected” and said the president considers himself to be “a king.”
