Tesla, Inc. (TSLA), formerly known as Tesla Motors, has grown since its IPO a decade ago into one of the world’s biggest producers of electric vehicles under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk. The company sells cars, SUVs and trucks. In addition to electric vehicles, Tesla has expanded into energy generation and storage systems. In the trailing 12-month period, Tesla has generated revenue of $26.0 billion and net income of -$144.3 million. As of this writing, the company has a market cap of $146.3 billion, which is nearly 5 times larger than General Motors Co. (GM).
Tesla will be added to the S&P 500 index before start of trading on Dec. 21, 2020.
Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers and businesspeople including Elon Musk, Martin Eberhard, J.B. Straubel, Marc Tarpenning, and Ian Wright. The company launched its first car in 2008. Musk currently serves as CEO of the company.

Elon Musk
In addition to Tesla, Elon Musk is also CEO of SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. Musk was born in South Africa and attended the University of Pennsylvania. Musk later founded city directory service Zip2, which was later sold to Compaq. He was a co-founder of PayPal Holdings, Inc. (PYPL). Musk then co-founded Tesla, among other companies. According to Forbes, Musk is currently the 31st-richest person in the world, with a net worth of about $35.9 billion.
Musk owns roughly 38.7 million shares of Tesla. This makes Musk the largest shareholder among both institutions and individuals. Musk owns approximately 21.0% of all outstanding Tesla shares. Musks’ stake is nearly as big as the next four-biggest investors, whose combined stake is about 23.2%.
Susquehanna Securities
The second-largest stake in Tesla is owed by Susquehanna Securities, which is part of the Susquehanna International Group, a global quantitative trading firm. The firm holds about $347.4 billion in managed 13F securities. Susquehanna holds more than 12.1 million shares of Tesla, which represents about 6.6% of all outstanding shares.
Baillie Gifford & Co.
The third-largest stake in Tesla belongs to Scottish investment management firm Baillie Gifford & Co. This firm is a private partnership that manages $245.3 billion in equity, fixed income, and multi-asset portfolios for clients around the world. Baillie Gifford currently owns nearly 12.1 million shares of Tesla, about 6.5% of all outstanding shares.
Capital World Investors
Capital World Investors is an equities-focused branch of investment management company Capital Group. Capital Group prioritizes active management strategies and currently holds about $1.8 trillion in assets under management. Capital World Investors is the fourth-largest shareholder and holds 10.7 million shares of Tesla, accounting for about 5.8% of all outstanding shares.
Citadel Securities LLC
Citadel Securities is a leading market maker for a diverse group of fixed-income and equity products and part of the larger Citadel hedge fund and financial services company. Citadel has roughly $30 billion in investment capital. Citadel Securities is the fifth-largest shareholder in Tesla and currently owns roughly 7.9 million shares, 4.3% of all outstanding shares.
