Boris Johnson Plans to Confront Amazon’s Jeff Bezos Over Taxes
Aides to U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he plans to confront Amazon (ticker: AMZN) founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos on the tax record of the U.S. online retail giant, when the two men meet Monday in New York.
Johnson, who will be in the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly, will also later travel to Washington for talks with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The U.K. was a strong advocate of the global deal on a minimum corporate tax rate clinched by the G-7 in June.
Amazon has said that it paid £492 million ($674 million) of “directly incurred taxes” last year on revenues of £20.63 billion. Those include the national insurance contribution and other levies as well as the corporate tax.
Johnson has limited sway over Bezos to make Amazon pay more taxes in the U.K., as long as the company abides by the country’s tax laws.
